Copa-Data's zenon Energy Data Management System
provides a solution package for energy data management

Manufacturing companies are continually confronted with the challenge of saving resources and reducing consumption in order to effectively optimise their energy budget. The zenon Energy Data Management System from COPA-DATA provides a solution package for energy data management, which will support companies to introduce and implement productive energy management.

Some of the typical energy sources in industrial manufacturing are electricity, water, (compressed) air, gas and steam. In addition to the obvious energy consumers in a production process there are "hidden" devices that also use energy. These can have a negative effect on the cost of running a plant and environmental progression.

Thomas Lehrer, Technical Product Manager at COPA-DATA explains: "Targeted data logging and evaluation is essential in order to identify the biggest energy consumers in a system and at the same time achieve the most saving potential in production. The data that was traditionally recorded in Excel tables with significant time expenditure can now be more rapidly and simply collected using modern automation software. An effective energy data management system minimises error rates, whilst also enabling benchmarking across equipment or even organisations. Energy managers can use EDMS data to undertake the necessary changes to step up their production and become more energy efficient. With our new zenon Energy Data Management System we would especially like to support energy-intensive manufacturing companies to identify potential savings, reduce their consumption and, in turn, their ecological footprint and costs."

A bundled solution package for all energy management requirements
The zenon Energy Data Management System fulfils all of the necessary requirements for comprehensive energy management. The system can be effortlessly integrated into existing infrastructures and can centrally read, gather and process large amounts of data from various sources if required. It is also possible to merge historical data and real time data from heterogeneous infrastructures or distributed production sites.

Graphically appealing reports, such as Historian trend, archive aggregation, trend per equipment group, cost distribution per variable or duration curve for equipment groups, show important energy performance indicators and provide a necessary overview. People on different levels - from top management and plant managers to machine operators or maintenance engineers - can access current analyses at any time.

The zenon Energy Data Management System also conforms to the defined requirements of the TÜV SÜD Certified Energy Data Management standard. The software thereby fulfils important criteria for the international energy standard ISO 50001 and enables the end user to gain a certification.

COPA-DATA CEO, Thomas Punzenberger, on the importance of this certification: "Governments in Europe and USA have worked intensively on national energy management programs in recent years to put companies under increasing pressure to optimise their energy management. Most of these programs include clearly defined requirements for ISO 50001. In many countries the appropriate measures and actions are rewarded with tax remuneration. However, if companies neglect defined criteria, their obligation to report, or if they do not undertake regular audits, they should expect to pay fines. Most programs, like the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), will already take effect this year. We wanted the zenon Energy Data Management System to place us one step ahead and let us provide companies with the necessary tools for energy management in due time."

COPA-DATA in profile
COPA-DATA is the technological leader for ergonomic and highly dynamic process solutions. The company, founded in 1987, develops the software zenon for HMI/SCADA, Dynamic Production Reporting and integrated PLC systems at its headquarters in Austria. zenon is sold through its own offices in Europe, North America and Asia, as well as partners and distributors throughout the world. Customers benefit from local contact persons and local support thanks to a decentralized corporate structure. As an independent company, COPA-DATA can act quickly and flexibly, continues to set new standards in functionality and ease of use and leads the market trends. Over 80,000 installed systems in more than 50 countries provide companies in the Food & Beverage, Energy & Infrastructure, Automotive and Pharmaceutical sectors with new scope for efficient automation.

About zenon
zenon is COPA-DATA`s highly versatile product family for industry-specific ergonomic process solutions: from sensors through to ERP. It consists of zenon Analyzer, zenon Supervisor, zenon Operator and zenon Logic. zenon Analyzer provides templates to create tailor-made reports (e.g. on consumption, downtimes, KPIs) based on data from IT and automation. zenon Supervisor, an independent SCADA system, allows comprehensive process monitoring and control of redundant systems, even in complex networks and with secure remote access. zenon Operator guarantees, as an HMI system, safe control of machines and simple, intuitive operation - including Multi-Touch. zenon Logic, which is an integrated IEC 61131-3-based PLC system, allows optimum process control and logical data processing. As a platform-independent portfolio for process solutions, the zenon Product Family integrates smoothly into existing automation and IT environments and provides set-up wizards and templates to enable easy configuration and simple migration from other systems. The principle of "setting parameters instead of programming" is a characteristic feature of the zenon Product Family.

Awarded software performances:
COPA DATA is Microsoft ISV Partner of the Year in Austria

Microsoft Austria has awarded the internationally operating software manufacturer COPA-DATA first place in the partner category Independent Software Vendor (ISV). Microsoft is thereby acknowledging COPA-DATA's outstanding software solutions. In the course of this year's Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in Orlando, Florida, Microsoft Austria General Manager, Dorothee Ritz, handed over the prize to COPA-DATA representatives Phillip Werr and Johannes Petrowisch.

The industry, as well as the public sector, are experiencing a flourish in digitalisation. Increasingly important in this context are storage, provision and subsequent processing of data in cloud applications. This establishes new business domains, strengthens companies' competitiveness and innovation capacity, contributes to more intelligent handling of valuable resources and reduces costs. As a long-standing and twofold Gold competence Partner of Microsoft (Application Development and Intelligent Systems), COPA-DATA relies on the extensive cloud solutions with Microsoft Azure.

"In the coming years the entire cloud market will see an enormous potential for innovation and growth," explains Jürgen Mayrbäurl, Business Evangelist Azure & Business Manager at Microsoft Austria. "In COPA-DATA we see a highly innovative partner at our side, who is creating a strong bridge between Microsoft Azure and industrial automation as well as digitalisation. This offers great opportunities such as intelligent improvement of production processes."

The automation software, zenon, created by COPA-DATA in Austria, links data from the sensor level right to the cloud and to mobile devices. Over 300 drivers in zenon ensure connectivity and communication between diverse machines and devices and thereby achieve hardware independence and flexibility. These are core elements for a digital future in automation when considering the Smart Factory of Industry 4.0, Smart City and the Internet of Things (IoT).

"The close partnership with Microsoft is very valuable for us. We are already working on numerous projects with Microsoft Azure," explains Johannes Petrowisch, COPA-DATA Partner Account Manager. "It is an honour for us to receive the ISV Partner award. It inspires us to continue developing and introducing innovative solutions to the market for our customers, based on the newest Azure Services with zenon."
